How To Save Rotting Decking?

Decking rotting is a common problem. There are some simple methods to save rooting decking and replace the decking board; you should try them. Decks are exposed to moisture and weather, which causes them to deteriorate after a few years.

Generally, hardwood or pressure-treated lumber is used to make decks, which requires more care than an engineered material. Woods tend to deteriorate over time.

If your deck has started to rot recently, you can save your deck from ruin by replacing that part with little time and money.

There are two types of rot in wood: dry rot and wet rot. Dry rot is caused by certain species of fungi that digest parts of the wood, and wet rot is caused by waterlogging and dampness.

Rot inside a deck is difficult to detect, so rot spreads. There are many ways to prevent this. In this post, I have mentioned some of the easy methods in this blog.

The leading causes of deck decay are harmful mildew, water damage, rot, and insects. The typical deck framing material across the United States is pressure-treated pine, which is much more durable than standard pine wood.

There are some easy way to save decking from rot.

Remove Dirt, Leaves, and other debris

Take regular care of your deck, and regularly clean Dirt, Leaves. Moisture and dirt are the leading causes of rotting. You can use mild soap and water solution to remove stains and mildew. Try to keep your deck dry to prevent water damage and rot.

Inspect Your Deck

Inspect your deck for signs of damage, such as cracked or warped boards. Rot can be stopped in its early stages. Check the underside of the deck board and the gaps between the two boards.

Protect Your Deck

There are thousands of stains and sealers on the market, some very good but many of poor quality. Choose better according to your wood species and weather. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for applying stain or sealer.

Flashing and Joist Tape

Another easy method is to use flashing and joist tape to save deck. When replacing old deck boards for new composite decking. You should use flashing and joist tape. Joist tape is an adhesive tape that is applied directly to the tops of joists, rim joists, ledger boards. Moisture is a deck’s worst enemy. Flashing joist tape acts as a kind of barrier that prevents moisture and insects from reaching the joist. Joist tapes not only protect your deck substructure but also protect your investment in your new deck.

First of all, after seeing the condition of rotting, and make sure it needs replacement or repair?

If the rot in the wood is still in the initial stage and is planted in a small part, then it can be changed. But if the rot has spread too much, then it would be good to completely replace the joist.

Step: 1 Remove the Screw and Nails

Use a pry bar or screwdriver to pry out the rotted joist screws and nails. Nails and screws can rust due to rot and moisture, so they don’t come off easily. You can use a chisel and hammer to remove it.
Sometimes wood becomes hollow due to rotting, in which case nails and screws come out easily.

Also, inspect the joists around the rotten joist, if the rot has spread to other parts as well, that area needs repair and replacement.

Step: 2 Remove Rotted Portions from Joist

Check the damaged wooden part thoroughly and take out the rotten part. You can use chisels and a hammer to remove the rotten part.

It is very important to get the rotten part out. Because if even a little rotten part is left in the joist, it starts rotting the wood again.

After removing the rotten part from the joist, thoroughly clean the joist with a wire brush. If it is not cleaned well, the Wood Sealer will not hold up well with the joist, and it starts to deteriorate again after some time.

Step: 3 Apply Wood Sealer

Apply the first thin coat of wood sealer and let it dry properly. Then apply another second coat of sealer.

It is necessary to fill the pit after cleaning the rot. You can use a wood filler to fill it. You can easily make wood filler (wood sawdust and glue) at home too (otherwise it is easily available in the wood market). It is long-lasting even after exposure to water.

Wood filler takes about 6 to 7 hours to dry properly. You can also use epoxy. While epoxy takes a time ranging from 12 to 24 hours to dry.

Step: 4 Fix the Joist

After the wood filler dries thoroughly in the joist or decking board, put the decking board in the proper place, and make holes for the screw and nail with the drill machine in the joist and decking board.

Before fixing the decking board, check for rotting to the decking board’s lower part and rim joist. This is very important because if there is even a little rottenness, you should also fix that soon.
